Mission work in Taiwan has been on-going since the early 17th entury. Modern Protestant missions history was initiated by the Presbyterian hurch in the late 1800s. Currently, official statistics list 4.5% of the population as Christian. These are largely found in the cities, among predominately middle class people. The more rural areas, and the labor class are much less reached, with some estimates as low as 0.1%. Most people in Taiwan (93%) adhere to Chinese traditional beliefs, which are a mixture of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism.
